CORE MODULES
1. Introduction to Hospital Administration
Synopsis: This module analyses of the processes and functions of administration, organizational theories, strategies and
techniques within a generic hospital system.
2. Hospital Organization and Administration: Principles and Practice
Synopsis: This module looks at the philosophies, methods, techniques and processes of utilising hospital staff effectively,
their development and training, the hospital organization.
3. Leadership Roles in Health Today
Synopsis: This module investigates the origins of Health Care and its development up to today’s standard, identifies various
roles of today's leaders within health care organizations, and prepares the student for leadership activities and contributions
4. Organizational Behavior in Health Care
Synopsis: This module investigates the functional dynamics of an organization’s structure and processes. In particular, it will
provide the health care manager with a framework for decision making, an understanding of work teams and employee
motivation handling of conflict, assessing work design, the concepts of motivation, communication, leadership and power
within a health care’s organizational framework.
5. Principles of Community Health Education
Synopsis: This module investigates the scope and value of the health educator and their impact on the community. In
particular, the legal and ethical issues faced by health educators and roles for community health education. The professional
skills and certification required for the health educator in their daily work and the changing role of the health educator in today’
s society. Also discussion on the worldwide educational problems relating to health issues.
6. Ethics and Decision Making in Health Care Environments
Synopsis: This module investigates the professional ethics and health care ethics of the health worker and its application in
today’s society. The principles of autonomy and informed consent, confidentiality and truthfulness, professional standards and
institutional ethics, ethical problems of death and dying, abortion, new methods of reproduction, the ethics of transplants, the
ethics of biomedical research. In particular the processes used in ethical decision making, whilst upholding the institutional,
professional, and personal ethics required.
Majors Options
1. Hospital Information System
Synopsis: This module investigates the applications and simulation of the fundamental concepts of the hospital information
system and its significance to hospital problem-solving and decision making.
2. Health Care Strategic Planning and Management
Synopsis: This module investigates the strategic planning and management of today’s health care industry both from a
worldwide prospective as well as a generic hospital one and the planning required for an expansion into the global market. In
particular, market research, international trends, remuneration and conditions, language considerations, health and safety
aspects, organizational structures, job descriptions, career planning, training, housing and integration into foreign cultures and
systems.
3. Financial Management of Hospital
Synopsis: This module investigates capital budgeting, inventory management, cash management, short and long term
sources and uses of funds and financial yields. In particular, financial problems and concerns that can effect a health care
organisation.
4. Management and Marketing in Health Care
Synopsis: This module investigates how the organization administrator or health care entrepreneur maintains program
integrity, product viability, and revenue streams to meet consumer demand through marketing efforts. In particular, supervision
of marketing efforts within an organization or team, maintenance of product line and revenue viability, identifying market niche,
opportunities, and demand.
Thesis Requirements:
Thesis writing may take either of the two forms, but each reflecting a scholarly piece of research at masters level. They may
take the form of a paper ready to be submitted for publication in an approved referred journal and accordingly, conform to the
editorial requirements of the journal. Such papers are likely to be of about 4,000 words (excluding appendices). Alternatively,
they may be a more elaborated research paper of 8,000 to 10,000 words. In either case the work must be refined, scholarly
and of masters standard.
Thesis’s as an applied In-Organization Research Project will normally involve Action Research, but approval may be given for
a detailed case study. Practicing managers would normally find it beneficial to undertake such research projects in their own
organizations, while consultants might undertake it in a client organization. The thesis would be approximately 10,000 -
15,000 words and would be expected to elaborate the problematic situation addressed and provide details of the method
employed and research findings. References should be made to global international health issues.
Overall Assessment of the MHA
The course work component of the MHA constitutes 6 credits per core module (36 credits), 6 credits for the major option and
the balance of credits being 18 credits for the thesis. All components of the program must be completed satisfactorily to
satisfy the requirements of the degree.
